The idea of excitement and awe one feels at seeing in the mirror at the start of everyday intrigued me to explore the nature of “reflections”. When we see words in mirrors we see them as inverted but when we see ourselves our mind can’t judge the trick of the mirror. Questioning the originality of the vision, the idea of illusion is the sub idea of a mirror in my body of work. Beauty is in imperfections. Sticking true to our belief that nothing is permanent and everyone must follow its life cycle, I believe my art to do the same. My art may seem like it’s crumpled but each bend has a story to tell, a feeling it evokes and I hope with time it ages and rusts and cracks. There’s a story behind every scar and that’s what makes us different, original. I want to celebrate that story and celebrate that imperfection because that is where true beauty lies. My mirrors are dented but they still sparkle.
About the Artist
Hussain Jamil (born 1990) is an art practitioner currently based in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his BFA from the National College of Arts, Lahore in 2014 specialising in Miniature Painting where he received a distinction for his efforts. Hussain then went on to pursue and complete his MA in Art and Design Studies from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore in 2018 where he graduated with Honours.
